Riddled Auto With Bullets
Berlin Man Held For Shooting Up Ocean City Policeman's Car.
January 12, 1929

Isaac Hadder, of near Berlin, is being held under bail of $3,000 charged with intent to kill Chief of Police Robert Allen, of Ocean City whose automobile was riddled with bullets as he was driving to his home late last Saturday night. Hadder, in default of bond, is in the Worcester County Jail at Snow Hill. Police believe the attack on the officer was due to raids that he had made on alleged speakeasies in Ocean City.

Anthony Quillen, of Ocean City is being sought on a similar warrant sworn out by the County authorities. Quillen, also known as "Reds" left this county Saturday night and has now been located.

According to Chief of Police Allen, he was on his way home late last Saturday night when a sedan automobile, containing several occupants passed him. "As the machine drew along side, a volley of pistol shots rang out", he said. Several bullets went through the automobile in which he was riding. Following the outburst of shots, the car sped away in the direction of Ocean City, but not before the Chief Allen had secured the license number of the car.

The attack upon the police officer was reported to Worcester County Sheriff, Walter R. Dennis. He traced the ownership of the car to Isaac Hadder, of near Berlin, and arrested him.

Earlier in the evening, Sheriff Dennis, who was assisted by Chief Allen, had staged two raids on alleged speakeasies at Ocean City. They arrested a woman and a man and seized a quantity of alleged liquor. The attack upon Police Chief Allen is believed to have been in revenge for his part in the raids.
