John Dale Showell, Jr.

1 July 1971 John Dale Showell, Jr., a pioneer in the development of Ocean City and the descendant of one of the five founders of this beach resort, is dead at the age of 81. Mr. Showell died Thursday in the Salisbury Nursing Home after a long illness. He was a descendant of the late Col. Lemuel Showell. Born at Berlin, Mr. Showell was a son of the late J. Dale and Bettie West Showell. The family moved to Ocean City when John was six years old. Mr. Showell in partnership with his surviving sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Showell Strohecker, also of Ocean City, built this resort's first swimming pool, first public bath house and first bowling alley. The sister and brother were partners in the operation of Showell's Amusements. Mr. Showell at one time was an extensive land owner here. He was a member and former vestryman of St. Paul By The See Episcopal Church here; a charter and life member of the local Sinepuxent American Legion Post No. 168; member of the 40 & 8; charter member of the Ocean City Lions Club and he also belong to Berlin's Evergreen Lodge No 153, AF & AM. Mr. Showell was a World War I Army veteran. His wife, Mrs. Sarah Stone Hickling Showell, died several years ago(14 September 1956). Surviving in addition to Mrs. Strohecker are a son, Ocean City councilman John Dale Showell, III; a daughter, Mrs. Harriett Showell Bald, Severna Park, Maryland and seven grandchildren. Interment will be in St. Paul Episcopal Church Cemetery in Berlin, Maryland.
