Lemuel Showell

Obituary Date: 3/8/1902

Information in this record:
The death of Col. Lemuel Showell occurred at his home in Ocean City, Saturday. He died from the effects of a fall received about six weeks ago. He was born at Showells in Worcester County, about five miles north of Berlin, in August 1825. He was considered at one time to be the wealthiest man in Worcester County, but met with reverses in 1887. He was one of the promoters and for a long time president of the Old Wicomico and Pocomoke Railroad. He was largely interested in vessel property and lived at Ocean City for the past twelve years. At the time of his failure he owned 28 farms in Worcester County. Deprivation in farm land values and bad investments in vessel property caused his failure. He was a Colonel on the staff of Gov. William T. Hamilton and was noted for his benevolence, giving freely to the poor. He leaves a widow and three daughters--Mrs. T. Howard Dail, of Baltimore; Lemeta, age 18 and Naudine, age 14 years. 8 March 1902, DM.
