John Showell

Obituary Date: 3/3/1947

Information in this record:
3 March 1947, John Dale Showell, 82, prominent retired Ocean City businessman and one of the resort's oldest residents, died at 2:45 Monday afternoon at his residence on Baltimore Avenue, following a brief illness.. The son of the late Mary Katherine Burton Showell and John Dale Showell, of Berlin, Maryland, both well known Eastern Shore families. He was born September 30, 11864, at the former Atlantic Nursery farm, several miles west of this community, and one time was one of the largest landowners in Worcester County, Maryland. Mr. Showell obtained his early education at the old Berlin Academy and later completed preparatory school at Tarrytown, N. Y. Bother he and his brother, the late Robert J. Showell, attended the University of Virginia. He was recognized in his "school days" as one of the best baseball player in this area. In 1884, his marriage occurred to Miss Elizabeth West, of Accomac County, Virginia, and they came to Ocean City 12 years later. After managing the hostelry now known as the Essex Hotel at the Boardwalk and First Street, for a short period, Mr. Showell had the Oceanic Hotel and Showell's bathhouse constructed. He also built the Mt. Vernon Hotel on Talbot Street. Several years ago, the Oceanic was made into shops and prior to that time Showell's Theater was erected. As a toke of respect, all resort business places closed for several hours yesterday )Wednesday) afternoon. Funeral services were held at 2. P.m. at his late home, conducted by the Rev. William L. DeWees, rector of the St. Paul's By The Sea Episcopal Church. Interment was in the Berlin episcopal Cemetery. He is survived by a son, John Dale Showell, Jr. and a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Showell Strohecker, both of Ocean City. Also by four grandchildren: Mrs. Harold Gordy, Ocean City; Mrs. Robert S. Hall, College Park; John Dale Showell, III, a student at Duke University, and Miss Harriett Showell, of Washington; and two great-grandchildren, Harold Burton Gordy, Jr. , and Elisabeth Showell Gordy.
