Elsie Murray (nee Gibbs)

Information in this record:
Elsie Gibbs Murray died Friday, December 29, 1995, in the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 83. Mrs. Murray was born on April 22, 1912, in St. martins, to the late John J. and Myra E. Gibbs. She graduated from the Salisbury Teachers School, now known as Salisbury State University, and from the University of Delaware. She was a teacher in the Smyrna School District (Delaware) for 15 years, retiring in 1977. Mrs. Murray was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Dover for 61 yeas. She enjoyed raising monarch butterflies and was interested in their migration. She also enjoyed taking research trips, including trips to Africa and an eclipse trip with the University of Delaware to record data. Mrs. Murray wrote articles for the magazine Science and Children. Mrs. Murray was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Murray, Sr. in June 1991, and by a grandson Thomas W. Murray III in December 1994. She is survived by two sons, Thomas W. Murray, Jr. of Dover and Maurice J. Murray of Florida; a daughter, Jo Ann Vickers of Annandale, Virginia; two sisters, Myra Hairgrove of Dover and Betty Jane Datesman of Ocean View, Delaware; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Burial will be in Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica, Delaware.
